Frequently Asked Questions

  • Depending where you are at on your journey, the first thing you will notice is that you will quickly gain a greater sense of awareness about your impact on the environment. The notifications will help you identify all the points where you could make more eco-friendly decisions. The impact score helps you understand what difference these decisions make. Over time and with enough repetition, eevie will actually enable you to adopt new habits and ultimately change your lifestyle.

  • eevie helps you track, reduce and restore your carbon footprint.

track: eevie helps us easily understand our impact on the Environment. Through a combination of personal reviews and automatic travel detection eevie calculates your daily carbon impact, helping you identify your biggest CO₂ emissions sources.

reduce: There are many ways to reduce our individual impact on the environment. eevie helps you build eco-friendly habits by nudging you with reminders, tips, and suggestions in the right moments so that we can permanently reduce your carbon footprint easier than ever before!

restore: There is only so much we can do ourselves but eevie helps you take care of the rest. Plant trees and grow your own forests where they are most needed to help restore devastated natural biodiversity and to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

  • You should use the app as often as you feel is right to help you advance on your selected habits. The more often you check-in, the faster you will progress and the more seedlings you can earn. Be sure to check in at least a few times per week in order to make your new behaviors stick. Regular reflection of your new behaviors will help you make them stick quicker!

  • You can select and change your habits any time in the Journey Tab by tapping the plus button in your Active Habits Section. To remove a selected habit, tap the red - button above it after selecting a new one before.Item description

  • We suggest that you start anywhere from 1 to 3 habits at a time. The idea is to start small, find regular routines in your existing schedule on which you can add new tiny climate habits. Always make coffee in the morning? Use this as your prompt to prepare your reusables for the rest of the day! If you try to do too much at once or select too big of a goal, you will struggle to succeed and progress.

  • Your carbon footprint measures how much carbon dioxide (CO₂) is released into the atmosphere as a result of your daily activities such as driving to work, switching on a light, or eating steak for dinner. We use your footprint to reflect your lifestyle’s impact on the climate. More precisely, we approximate change to estimate your yearly CO₂ emissions if you lived every day like today. If you travel, your impact score will automatically increase.

By reviewing your daily progress, your impact score will adjust to fit your behaviour on that day. If everyone reaches a “4 tonnes CO₂ lifestyle” by 2025, we will prevent global warming from surpassing a 2°C increase and the consequent climate catastrophe.

  • Our general methodology is to use country-specific average emissions data provided by sources such as ISO, OECD, World Bank, the UN, FAO, EIA, and other organisations and to then base our habit action calculations on scientific research papers put into relation with regional average emissions.

This way for example we can calculate daily behavior emissions of our users logged actions comparing the impact of their activities to the impact if they would not act specifically to their countries average GHG emissions. For example, the average emission of a daily meat diet in the US is approximately 10kg CO₂ per day. This number is derived by calculating a US average daily calorie intake of 3800 kCal (FAO) times the average gCO₂ per kCal of 2.82 (Scarborough). Using the same sources, the average emission of a vegetarian diet is approximately 5.5kg CO₂ per day.

We, therefore, calculate an average saving of 4.5kg CO₂ per meatless day in the US. The more personal input a user gives, i.e. the refinement of their average daily kCal, the more accurate the calculation becomes for their CO₂ reduction. Wherever possible scientific research papers are used for the best estimations.

For examples of data sources, please contact us directly.

  • You can see how you compare to your countries average after calculating your footprint in the <Journey Tab> of the app. You can also see how you compare to your colleagues in the <Community Tab> of the app. Finally you can also view different comparisons by tapping the rotate symbol at the top of the company leaderboard to show the amount of CO₂ reduced by tracking your progress or the t CO₂ of your yearly carbon footprint.

  • We believe that the sum of every small action makes a large difference and brings people together, who want to impact their future. Monitoring and adjusting your consumption behaviour leads you to more awareness and making green choices. The point is to get started and surprise yourself with the change you’ll be able to make.

  • eevie uses your location permission so that it can identify when to nudge you with actionable information, helping you act on your selected habits. Location permission is not required to use the app however, if you do, it can gain extra benefits such as automatic travel impact calculation, suggestions of relevant places of interest nearby and context-aware nudges that help remind you of your habits when relevant.

  • Securing our user’s data and privacy is one of our most important values. To find our how this is done exactly, please visit our privacy policy at www.eevie.io/privacypolicy.

  • Planting trees is a nature-based solution in combating climate change. Planting in the right places and nurturing their growth is an extremely powerful lever in this endeavour. While a tree grows, it removes carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere through the natural process of photosynthesis and stores the carbon (C) in its’ leaves, branches, stems, bark, and roots. In this process, oxygen (O₂) is released back into the atmosphere, which is also why trees are so important to ensure we have enough clean air to breathe!1

CO₂ accounts for three-quarters of total greenhouse gas emissions and its current high level is directly contributing to our climate’s rapid heating.2

Other great “side-effects” of planting trees is that they help protect our natural biodiversity, create habitat for endangered species, prevent the spreading of deserts and provide income and food for struggling communities all over the world.3

There are many more positive effects of reforestation, which are not immediately associated with planting trees but very important when it comes to decarbonising different industries such as the fashion or construction industry. The full list can be accessed on the UN’s portal: https://www.un.org/esa/forests/news/2019/03/on-international-day-unece-fao-forestry-and-timber-section-releases-10-facts-to-fall-in-love-with-forests/index.html

  • To ensure that your trees are effectively planted where they are most needed in combating our climate crisis, eevie has partnered with Eden Reforestation Projects, one of the worlds leading tree-planting organisations. The planting of the seedlings is managed by Eden and will take place under their local supervision.

To learn more about Eden, please check out their website https://edenprojects.org.

  • We know that there’s a lot of emotion wrapped in planting a tree. That is why eevie wants to give its users a visually attractive overview of their impact when planting a tree. Once eevie gets the confirmation from Eden that the trees are planted the user is notified and their virtual trees start to grow on a symbolic schedule. Transparency is very important to eevie. We therefore want to inform our users proactively that the growing schedule of a tree depends on many factors such as the species, the area where the tree is planted, etc. At this stage, eevie cannot replicate the actual reality within the app to represent the tree growing.

  • The areas of the world that are most impacted by deforestation are also some of the most poverty-stricken and underdeveloped areas worldwide. Generally, deforestation occurs because communities need wood for construction, fuel to cook, fuel to keep warm, and land to plant crops and feed their families. Eden Reforestation tries to focus its efforts on such countries that are suffering heavily from deforestation while trying to give local communities support to lift themselves out of extreme poverty. Also, trees grow faster and thus trap more CO2 in the tropics. The most ‘productive’ period for carbon sequestration by a tree are the first decades of its life. Where you have trees, you also have more rainfall, which provides the required water for growing food. In contrast, if we plant trees in the northern hemisphere, where we naturally have more snow covered areas during the winter months, reflecting the sun back, we would contribute to a reduction of this cooling capacity of trees. The tropics allow for evergreens, trees that do not lose their leaves and sequester carbon all year around, vs in the northern hemisphere where most trees lose their leaves for 4-6 months during the year. According to the UN, 25% of medicine produced rely on rainforest plants, which is another reason why humanity should be interested in keeping the rainforest and other tropical forests alive.

  • Eden plants different species of trees, but a large majority of the trees being planted on our users’ behalf, are mangrove species. At the age of 3-5 years, this species begins to produce and drop its own propagules, which can be used to give rise to a new tree. Propagules are one reason why mangroves are so cost-efficient and low maintenance for Eden to plant. Propagules are elongated, vegetative structures that begin the germination process while still attached to the parent tree. The growth period depends on the tree species. Mangrove species such as Rhizophora are considered fast-growing, and maturation begins between years 3-5, at which point we see the tree begin to produce its own propagules. Mangrove species such as Ceriops are slower growing and can take several more years before being considered mature. Eden works with a variety of native species, some of which are fast-growing while others are slow-growing. Diversity is essential in restoring the natural environment.

  • Together with our planting partner Eden Reforestation Projects, we calculated that each earned seedling will, once planted, grow into a tree that sequesters on average 12,5 kg CO₂ every year for the next 25 years. Depending on how many seedlings the user decides to plant, eevie will calculate and visualize the amount of CO₂ that their trees take out of the atmosphere!
